Meet us at the
AgoRA
In ancient times, Greek citizens would come together at the agora – the centre of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life in the city. The agora, literally ‘gathering place’ in ancient Greek, was the place to be.
That’s what shift supervisor Marc Claveau had in mind when employees at our Sarnia re nery were asked to suggest names for the new community gathering space on Sarnia’s waterfront.
“This is actually the second time my suggestion for this name has been chosen,” says Marc. “When I was in high school, there was a naming contest for the central gathering space in the middle of the facility. I discovered the term ‘agora’ through good old fashioned research at the library and thought it was a perfect t for the intended use of the space.”
The Suncor Agora at Centennial Park was jointly sponsored by Suncor and the City of Sarnia, and opened to the public in June. For the rst time at a City event, a traditional territory acknowledgement was included. “Not only was this a great opportunity to support the community, but it provided a space to work with the City to acknowledge the Indigenous history of the local area,” says Jennifer Johnson, senior advisor, communications & stakeholder relations.
Suncor has a proud legacy of supporting community groups and initiatives to help build sustainable and resilient communities in our local operating areas. As a member of the Sarnia-Lambton community for the past 65 years, the Sarnia re nery has built many strong community relationships.
In April, the Suncor Energy Foundation, together with Lambton College, announced a $300,000 donation to purchase industry equipment, software and simulators to support enhanced training for students enrolled in the college’s technology programs. The alliance helps us meet our workforce needs and hire local graduates.
“As a major employer in the region, the Sarnia re nery has bene ted from the strong, collaborative relationship we have built over many years with Lambton College,” says Mark Hiseler, Sarnia re nery vice president.
“We’re grateful for the strong relationships we have in this community. Our continued commitment to the Sarnia-Lambton community is evident not only through the investments we make, but also through the involvement of our employees with the causes and organizations that matter to them.”
Leaders and employees from the Sarnia re nery and St. Clair Ethanol Plant were on hand for the of cial re-opening ceremony of Centennial Park in June.
Chuck Ewart from Lambton College shows Sarnia re nery vice president Mark Hiseler some of the equipment purchased thanks to a Suncor donation.
