How the res brought out our best
As I thought about my column for this special issue of 360, I was struck by how appropriate the theme is: Grace under re.
When wild res tore through Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region
in May, Suncor employees joined with community partners, industry and government to provide support through this unprecedented challenge. For our company, the situation called upon the discipline of our emergency management systems; our leadership and compassion; our ability to be nimble and do the right thing; and, of course, our commitment to safety. For our people, it was a test of their grit and grace, their patience and resilience.
As a company, we came together – safely evacuating more than 10,000 people and hundreds of their pets; opening homes to family, friends, and even strangers; generously donating to charitable organizations; working tirelessly around the clock to support our response; and keeping other important work progressing. There’s no question, it was a full team effort.
In my 14 years with Suncor, I have never been prouder of this company, my colleagues, and my fellow Albertans.
As we move forward, I am sure there will be ups and downs for some people. Be assured, Suncor will continue to work with

community leaders, industry partners and government, and we will continue to support our people. It may be a long road for some but we will get there – I’m con dent in that.
And now that we’ve returned to normal operations, our focus remains the same. Through the lens of our key behaviours – leading the way and executing with operational discipline – we will continue to deliver safe, reliable operations and strong central programs. And, we will continue to celebrate our efforts, as we are already seeing with the President’s Operational Excellence Awards, the release of our
Report on Sustainability and the launch of our annual United Way campaigns this fall.
Throughout the rst half of the year, you’ve all shown the strength of the Suncor spirit and our values. Thanks for all you have done, and everything you do. I’m looking forward to seeing what we accomplish the rest of this year – together, and stronger than ever.
