MY JOURNEY TO ZERO
“It’s really quite astounding and an amazing testament to our core value – safety above all else. I couldn’t
be more proud of everyone involved.”

Handling emergency situations is not a skillset many people have the opportunity, or desire, to hone. But at Suncor, we have a deep roster of employees who have the ability and training to respond. Stephen Full is one of those individuals.
As an incident commander (IC) during the ve-week Fort McMurray wild res response, Stephen held a key role. The IC is a member of the Response Management Team (RMT) and manages all aspects of the response related to the protection of life, environment, public property, corporate assets and reputation.
“The Fort McMurray wild re evacuation was the third personnel relocation that I’ve been involved in after Libya and Syria,” says Stephen. “While each incident was unique in terms of size, scale and response – the main objective for all three was the safety of everyone involved.”
In any emergency response, especially one that involves the staggering number of moving pieces that Fort McMurray did, it’s easy to get caught up in the details and the hectic pace. So, the most important job of the IC is to keep everyone focused on safety throughout it all.
“For me, the most poignant moment was the day we issued our 100th RMT status report, almost 30 days into the response. The RMT paused to celebrate the success of the relocation efforts and re ect on the number of workers, civilians and even pets that safely made their journeys with no signi cant injuries.
It’s really quite astounding and an amazing testament to our core value – safety above all else. I couldn’t be more proud of everyone involved.”
