SAFETY STAND DOWN SESSIONS
Last June, more than 100 safety stand down sessions were held across the organization. People came together to recognize the tragic loss of life which occurred, reflect on our safety efforts and, as individuals, recommit ourselves to our most critical value. Below are examples of work that’s been done company-wide so far. There is a lot more being looked at for each of the areas.
WHAT WE HEARD
WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR
1. Improve incident communication processes to share incidents’ findings, corrective actions
and learnings.
Safety communications repository
We've introduced a one-stop shop on the Core for all employees and contractors to access searchable safety communications. It houses safety and incident
alerts, incident learnings, safety moments, toolbox talks and information on safety meetings and guidelines for safety stand downs. Visit the Core > Tools and Resources > Safety > Safety communication repository.
2. Clear, quality, accessible procedures are needed, with reinforcement of the importance of adhering to them.
3. Incident reporting – quality incident-management and action-management tools are critical to identifying trends and ensuring follow-through.
Improvements in how we report, track and learn
from incidents
We have a project underway to design tools and simplify company-wide processes for effective investigations, corrective actions and incident learning. Environment, Health & Safety is working with business units and functions to ensure the tools and processes can be standardized, while allowing all areas to make sound decisions to minimize their risks.
4. Safety moments have more impact if they highlight real incidents.
Safety moment improvements
Guidelines and governance for safety moments have been updated. A new presentation template ensures a one-way approach, and a template designed specifically for incident-based safety moments includes a tie to operational discipline behaviours. The searchable safety moment library is sorted in the following topics: personal safety, process safety, health, and industrial hygiene. Visit the Core > Tools and Resources > Safety > Safety Moments.
5. Higher visibility of our safety messages.
“Focus on safety” section added to the Core homepage This section reflects and reminds employees about our value of safety above all else. It includes weekly safety moments and links to safety resources.
