3 Holding down the Fort
While we’re polishing our base businesses, we also want growth.
Fort Hills, one of the best undeveloped oil sands mining assets in Alberta, will be Suncor’s biggest capital project ever. We’re operator of the project, a partnership with Total E&P Canada Ltd. and Teck Resources.
Developing Fort Hills safely, reliably and on budget is critical to Suncor – and this year will test our project execution abilities. The team will work toward a number of significant construction milestones. Site construction manpower is currently approximately 3,000 and will continue to ramp up over the next couple of years. Construction on the main admin buildings has started and will continue through 2015 with completion mid-2016. We expect first oil as early as the fourth quarter of 2017.
Fort Hills fits our plans to develop our oil sands resources, with an expected mine life of decades. At full production, the project is expected to yield an average 180,000 barrels of bitumen per day – roughly the output of Firebag. It features a new treatment process for Suncor that produces a higher-quality bitumen, which can improve upgrader reliability or be sold directly to market.

All other discussions are irrelevant if we can’t get (safety) right. We need to be honest about what’s not working and how to fix it. We must be vigilant in living our most critical value: Safety above all else.
