SIMPLY STEVE
Together, we’re making history
This summer, from coast to coast, Canadians will celebrate the 150th year of Canada’s confederation. Here at Suncor, we’re also celebrating some anniversaries – 50 years of operations in the oil sands and 65 years of operations in Sarnia. As we mark these milestones, they give us cause to re ect on the proud roots of our nation and our company, our present-day challenges and opportunities, and the hopeful future ahead of us.
The oil sands have existed for thousands of years, but it took tremendous vision, ingenuity and persistence to develop an ef cient and economical way to transform bitumen into a source of energy. Skeptics were doubtful, but Suncor proved them wrong. We were the rst company to develop the oil sands, creating an industry that is now a key contributor to Canada's prosperity. This is reason to celebrate with pride Oil Sands’ 50th anniversary. On page 14, employees and retirees share some of their favorite stories over the years.
From coast to coast to coast, our operations impact local communities, including many First Nation and Métis communities. We have worked hard to build strong relationships and ensure communities bene t from the economic opportunities that come from energy development through employment, contracting of goods and services and community investment – but we still have more work to do. That’s why Suncor is committed to a long-term social goal that focuses on changing the way we think and act so we can strengthen relationships and increase the participation of Aboriginal people in energy development.
As someone who immigrated to this wonderful country and became a citizen, I believe one of Canada’s many strengths is
our collective diversity of histories and experiences. We are resourceful, innovative, and collaborative – which has enabled us to grow successful companies like Suncor and a vibrant country.
When I look ahead, I am hopeful and optimistic. We made a commitment to lead the way. Together, we create energy for a better world, and each and every one of you has a role. We must strengthen relationships with our communities and advance technology and innovation to improve the oil sands so that it continues to be an important part of the energy future (on page 16, you’ll see the evolution of our
technology and innovation and understand why I am so optimistic). I am excited about being part of an industry – and a company – that will continue to share in the full potential and prosperity of Canada’s incredible resources.
Our track record as an oil sands pioneer – and as a nation – is both cause for celebration and inspiration for the future. I hope you take time this summer to re ect on the moments in your – our – history that make you proud. And of course, above all else, do it safely.
Steve and team Suncor celebrate a win at the 2016 President's Cup in Fort McMurray.
