Corporate Security team helped out-of-region RCMP secure vehicles off of roadways and familiarized police with roads and facilities.
“I was at Firebag when we completed the safe passage of 10,000 people out of the region. You don’t normally see families and pets at our lodges, let alone passengers holding cats and dogs on an airplane. It was amazing how calm people were. They were relieved Suncor was helping them leave and grateful to be safe.”
ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY (EH&S)
“As industry representative on the Alberta Wild re Incident Command, I ew over the region numerous times. With changing wind conditions, to say that the re behaviour was extremely volatile would be an understatement. I saw some re hot spots grow in real time.”
– Ken Bisgrove, director, central environment and regulatory services
Calgary
For the rst few weeks of the response, Calgary’s Response Management Team (RMT) was staffed 24-7. Formal roles on the team represented communications, documentation, regulatory, nance, HR, legal, logistics, operations, planning, process,
risk, safety, and security.
LEGAL AFFAIRS
How many lawyers does it take to support a crisis 24-7? About 30. As a publicly-traded company, getting the details right is critical. Legal collaborated with Finance and Communications to ensure timely and accurate information went out to stakeholders.
– Gary Wagner, director, corporate security
OPERATIONS
During the initial evacuation, minimally-staffed operations teams brought Base Plant down to a safe mode, securing and monitoring the plant. On May 12, when the facility was deemed safe to restart, Operations started to ramp back up; this was interrupted May 16 when the re forced the second evacuation of Base Plant. The
May 3 shutdown took approxi- mately 24-36 hours, but the May 16 shutdown was accomplished in a little more than 12.
“It was tough leaving. We had no way of knowing when, or if, we’d be coming back and what we’d even come back to. The emotions were de nitely high.” – Dennis Banks, director, energy and utilities operations
RMT
Energy & Utilities operators kept the lights on and potable water available until all areas of Base Plant were safe and cleared out.
“Legal Affairs’ rst job was to support our leaders’ exercise of due diligence, so that decision making clearly re ected Suncor living its values, including safety above all else and do the right thing, through an unprecedented crisis.” – Thomas Kehler, VP,
legal affairs
CRISIS MANAGEMENT TEAM (CMT)
The ELT, along with senior leaders from Government Relations and Communications, were responsible for the big picture – ensuring we were making the right decisions to keep our people safe, supporting

the organization in securing resources and timely decisions, and keeping our board and government partners informed.
HUMAN RESOURCES
When Fort McMurray was evacuated, Human Resources quickly opened a dedicated Suncor Family Response Centre to support displaced employees. More than 140 HR team members staffed the
