SIMPLY STEVE
Talk leads to action
One of the things I’ve learned over the years is the value you get from talking about safety.
We saw the rich discussions that ensued from the safety stand downs and Oil Sands task force work last year. And every day,
I know that you and others across the company keep safety top of mind in tool-box talks, team meetings and individual conversations.
I’ve also seen the benefits of bringing safety into my discussions to make better, more informed decisions.
At our executive leadership team meetings this year, we’ve been discussing safety more than ever. It’s a conscious effort on our part to double-down on what really matters in the face of the many pressing issues in front of us, such as oil prices and cost management.
There have been many safety-related discussions over the first half of this year. I want to share with you a few of the things we’re talking about.
Cost management: When we announced the spending reductions
in January, we made a commitment to ensure the cuts would not compromise our safety, reliability or environmental performance. Nothing is more important. We’ve been asking the right questions throughout our discussions to ensure
our budget supports these fundamental company priorities.
How we work: We all have a role to
play in strengthening operational discipline. In response to your feedback from our engagement survey and the need for us all to work more effectively, we are introducing changes to how we measure performance for employees and leaders. These changes, which you’ll be hearing more about in your mid-year performance discussions, reflect the fact that how
we work is as critical as what we are doing to improve our safety, reliability and drive good cost-management across the organization.
What’s ahead: We know there are greater risks during maintenance season. In the weeks ahead, several of our operational sites will undergo planned maintenance.
On the Major Projects side, Fort Hills is ramping up to new peaks in terms of labour. And while indications are good that we’ve set the right tone at Fort Hills, it’s critical we keep our focus on safety this year and next.
Our performance: Our first quarter results were marked by much better safety performance and more reliable operations – a testament to our ongoing focus on operational excellence and the fact that all of the talk we are doing about safety and reliability is leading to the right actions.
As always, thanks for your efforts. Continue to speak up about what matters most – the well-being of you and your colleagues. And stay safe.
