WHAT IS AN ASSET?
An asset is a producing or processing facility
and its infrastructure. This includes plants, mines, wells, roads, buildings and so on.
2. Integrated teams
We’ve always believed in
teams, but before we might have handed off a project between internal
organizations. ADEM requires a fully integrated team through the life of a project – with representatives from Development, Execution and Operations (including Technical Services and Maintenance). Better, and earlier, collaboration will lead to stronger project results for Suncor.
3. Strong governance
ADEM ensures focus on the
right projects, with gate reviews completed before proceeding to
the next stage. Gate reviews are an objective, independent test to ensure a proposed investment meets business goals and has the best scope and design to get the greatest returns.
360: Where does operational discipline fit in?
Darryl: ADEM provides the framework for us to apply operational discipline from start to end. We begin by seeking knowledge to best understand the problem or opportunity as well as our various options. We then take the best option to a gated process where adhering to procedure is critical. We use a questioning attitude to surface problems at each gate to ensure we have the right business case, scope, and execution plan to meet the business requirements. Our integrated teams ensure the right level of collaboration, while still outlining clear accountabilities at every stage of ADEM.
WHERE DO YOU USE ADEM?
ADEM applies to developing both new assets, such as creating a new mine or adding a new processing unit to a refinery,
and the projects supporting existing assets, such as replacing a unit.
360: Why ADEM, and why now?
Darryl: Looking at our results, we can do much better. To achieve profitable growth we need to develop and execute projects differently. ADEM is based on industry best practices and is part of OEMS Element 8.
With billions in capital investments, we want to make sure we spend that money effectively. ADEM is part of the systems and culture that will allow us to develop and execute our projects and manage growth in a disciplined way. ADEM helps focus on projects that deliver the best possible returns on every dollar spent.
360: Has ADEM already been used? Where?
Darryl: We released a few sections of ADEM before full implementation. The Wood Buffalo Regional Development team in Oil Sands & In Situ started to use ADEM on large projects that are in their early stages. One example addressed the question of what to do when North Steepbank reaches the end of its life.
The ADEM team explored 11 mine replacement scenarios and narrowed them down to the two highest-value options.

WHERE DON’T YOU USE ADEM?
ADEM does not cover information technology projects, corporate initiatives, product development and
routine replacement-in-kind maintenance.
360: How and when will the rest of the company see ADEM?
Darryl: The business units will work on how and on which projects to apply ADEM standards in their own areas. We’re focusing first on Oil Sands & In Situ, and expect Refining & Marketing and Exploration & Production will get more involved later in the year.
Projects are all at different stages, so we’ll look carefully at where to implement ADEM, based on where we can capture the most value. Introducing changes to projects under construction will not add value. So, we’ll focus on projects that are earlier in development. The Executive Sub-committee and Council will steer implementation. As with all of OEMS, as standards are developed, there’s a timeline to get to full implemention. You’ll hear more about what’s happening within your business unit as the year goes on.
