Asset Development & Execution Model
MAKE WAY FOR ADEM
A new way of thinking
for smart investments and strong results
Taking a project from innovative idea
to profitable operation takes vision and effort. It takes operational discipline.
And increasingly, it takes a new way of thinking that emphasizes understanding business needs first to create strong results. 360 spoke with Darryl Metz, VP project
services, Major Projects to find out what you need to know about the new Asset Development & Execution Model,
or ADEM (pronounced AY-dem).
360: What is ADEM?
Darryl: ADEM is a stage-gated process used to develop and execute projects. It meets the requirements of Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) Element 8.3, Asset Sustainment and New Asset Development. It starts by understanding the business need, finding options and narrowing them down so the right solution moves ahead. ADEM is all about asking the right questions, to make the right decisions, to execute the right projects for Suncor.
360: What’s the key to implementing ADEM and improving project returns for Suncor?
Darryl: There are three key aspects to successfully implementing ADEM:
1. Up-front focus
ADEM places greater emphasis
on the early stages of a project. We want to understand the
problem and look at many options before finding the one that gives the best value. It’s asking “Should we build?” instead of “What will it take to build?” ADEM recognizes that sometimes the best option isn’t a whole new project at all. We need to ensure we find the right solution, then look at the most effective way to develop and execute the project.
