MY JOURNEY TO ZERO
“You never know what dangers are hiding underneath an un-cleared path.”
Tara Hingley
Environment, health & safety program co-ordinator
Oil Sands & In Situ
Tara Hingley, like most of us, finds there are never enough hours in the day. She learned the hard way that taking a shortcut can be dangerous.
“It was a combination of things that led to my incident and all of them were preventable.”
Tara was in a rush to get to work and decided to take a shortcut across a patch of snow. What she didn’t realize was that hidden beneath the freshly fallen snow was a metal grate. Tara slipped on the grate and fell, severely injuring her arm.
“I was rushing and wasn’t wearing proper footwear for the conditions. As a safety professional, I am always reinforcing these messages, but that day, I made some poor choices and paid the price,” adds Tara.
Tara reminds people that safety is something we need to think about every day. It isn’t just about looking out for what others are doing. It is about personal accountability.
“Safety isn’t something you turn on and off. Things can happen anytime, at any place if you aren’t focused.”
SAFETY MOMENT
A few reminders to help you stay focused on safety:
•Always stay on dedicated pathways.
•Wear the appropriate footwear for the task and conditions.
•Slow down and allow plenty of time to get to where you need to go.
