My co-worker was lying on the grating in obvious pain and I was in a state

of shock. I couldn’t dance with my daughter at her wedding. It has been

almost 10 years and I still can’t stand on my leg for more than an hour. I

woke up in the hospital and couldn’t remember how I got there. My foot is

75 per cent numb. I couldn’t believe how one second could impact me for such a long time. It’s a good thing my

wife was there, my heart sunk when I heard the news. It’s something I never want to go through again. Suddenly

things went black. My injury has affected me in everything I do. They told me to be careful and I didn’t listen.

The pain was so intense; I knew right away something was very wrong. I fell more than six feet onto concrete and

landed directly on my chest. It was really frightening. My finger was crushed, I am lucky I didn’t lose my whole

hand. The ladder collapsed and crushed my ankle. It knocked the wind out of me and was really frightening. I

feel like I let my co-workers down. I couldn’t play hockey for eight weeks. An extra five minutes could have made

all the difference. I will never feel 100 per cent again. I am reminded of what happened every day when I look

down at my leg. My ankle was in pieces. They said I would never be able to ride my motorcycle again. My wife

had to do everything for me for six weeks. I couldn’t drive my car, I couldn’t walk without crutches. When I hit

the ground, I knew right away it was serious. I can’t do some of my favourite things anymore like go boating

or snowmobiling. They called my family to tell them to come to the hospital right away. I had to re-learn how

to do everything again with my other hand. My boyfriend panicked, he didn’t know what I had done to myself.

My heart almost stopped twice in surgery. I would do anything to go back in time to before my injury. My co-
