Wastewater treatment facility bolsters water management
The new $190-million oil sands wastewater treatment facility is up and
running. “The new facility is the latest and largest piece of our water
strategy,” says Michael d’Entremont, senior oil sands development
advisor and water strategy development lead. “It’s helping us
significantly reduce the volume of water in our tailings ponds at our base
plant.” The plant takes the wastewater generated in the upgrading
process and cleans it for reuse as makeup water in upgrading and
utilities. “By doing so, we’ve increased wastewater recycle rates and
reduced how much river water we import, virtually eliminating the flow
of wastewater to our tailings ponds,” says Michael.
