Community service is our thing
In recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, we asked employees to do three things for their community in 2017. We weren’t surprised when our inbox ooded with inspiring stories. Here are just a few examples.
James McLean, senior advisor, strategic planning
Mississauga
1. For 10 years, I have delivered library and audio books to homebound people in the City of Mississauga.
2. This year, I volunteered physical labour and displayed my love for animals at the Cedar Row Farm Sanctuary.
3. I recently learned how to play the bagpipes, and this year I joined the St. Andrews Pipes & Drums Band. As a member of this volunteer band, I play in local parades and community events, including Canada Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Douglas Lacey, director, tailings engineering
Fort McMurray
1. In June, our team helped stock shelves at the Wood Buffalo Food Bank. I will also chair the Together we Care campaign for Suncor Oil Sands in 2017.
2. I volunteer with Fort McMurray Minor Baseball as an umpire, off- eld of cial and parent.
3. I will once again volunteer as a minor hockey coach (15th season!). It is a wonderful chance to spend quality
time with my kids and help grow my skills and knowledge of the game.
Lei Sun, engineer, process control
Edmonton
1. I will provide free transportation to the international students arriving to Canada for the rst time to study.
2. I will help our church with cooking meals, local children's services, and assist with cleaning up the community centre we rent.
3. I’ll take the Suncor Aboriginal Awareness training and teach my two-year-old daughter to respect people from different cultures.
Howard McIntyre, VP, supply chain & eld logistics
Calgary
1. I will visit seniors’ residences with my golden retriever, Sasha. I want to bring comfort and smiles to our seniors while listening and engaging with them.
2. I will donate blood on a regular basis. I was restricted from donating due to travels in South America and can now re-establish a donation cycle to provide for Canadians in immediate need.
3. I will help 10 new immigrants in their search for employment in Canada. Experience has taught me that “navigating” and learning “how to” nd a career opportunity is a big hurdle for new Canadians.
You can still submit your three things to receive $150 in SunCares rewards. Search ‘Three Things for Canada’ on the Core.
