A DEEPER DIVE INTO
water management
SOMETHING BIGGER
Responsible development means balancing our water requirements with the need to maintain
a clean, safe and plentiful supply for current and future generations.
∏
THE TRIPLEBOTTOM LINE
It’ll take a triple bottom line approach to meet our business goals, while ensuring responsible
water management practices. We need water to operate, but using less of it benefits the environment,
the communities near our operations and our business.
ENVIRONMENTAL
The environmental health of the Athabasca River, the main source of water for our operations, is under constant scrutiny.
We monitor our operations to meet water quality standards and environmental monitoring requirements.
Water withdrawals have been occurring since the late 1960s with no apparent impacts.
SOCIAL
People living near the Athabasca River, including many of our own employees, rely on it for various purposes
including fishing, recreation and drinking water. We consult regularly with these stakeholders.
ECONOMIC
The less water we withdraw, the less we have to treat and manage.
And that reduces our operating costs.
∏
OUR STRATEGY INOIL SANDS & IN SITU
Eliminate or reduce water use
Reuse water where possible
Return water back to the environment
Suncor’s total water withdrawal is now below We have committed to reducing our company-wide
1998 levels, even though production has more freshwater intake by 12% by 2015
than tripled since that time.
(as compared to 2007).
