The 4Pinc campaign has been used to educate workers about Line of Fire injuries.
Think pink
– the Pink Pinch Point Project (4Pinc)
Don’t be fooled – pink isn’t just for cartoon panthers anymore. It’s a dynamic colour that our In Situ
drilling and completions crew began wearing on their hands to identify hand injuries. It’s also one
example of a Line of Fire injury reduction program that’s already underway.
Since 2009, the drilling, completions, logistics and lands crew has been participating in a program
called 4Pinc, which helps identify pinch and crushing points that could cause hand injuries.
Twice a month, during a 4Pinc shift, the shift supervisor brings out a pink hard hat and set of pink
gloves and looks for workers who are putting their hands in dangerous areas or in hazardous
positions. If a worker is ‘caught,’ they must wear the pink hard hat, take photos of their hands
wearing the pink gloves in the same position where they were caught and where their hands
should be, and ill out a form that will be used to help educate other workers about improper
hand placement.
The pink hard hat and gloves are then passed around to other team members if they are caught by
fellow workers – a sort of ‘tag, you’re it’ exercise. This activity is repeated until the end of the shift.
4Pinc has been adopted in Oil Sands and continues to raise awareness about the negative effects of
hand injuries. For more information about how to implement 4Pinc at your site, contact Mike Doyle at
